Not anymore with the advent of the newly approved pilot certification rating by the FAA In 2005 the rating of Sport Pilot was instituted which has the effect of cutting the cost of learning to fly by two-thirds!

The issuance of this new rating has served to revitalize general aviation. More people are learning to fly in an affordable manner in aircraft that are designed with the Sport Pilot in mind.

At Leading Edge Flight Training we have geared our program to serve this new interest in aviation created by the Sport Pilot designation. We have made available to our students the ultimate aircraft to learn in and fly the Sport Pilot way. The new Flight Design CTSW sport plane is a state of the art Light Sport training aircraft.

A New Airplane

Instruments on the CTOur 2008 Flight Design CTLS Light Sport Plane is the best performing, Light Sport Plane on the market. Imagine flying 8 hours without refueling and traveling approximately 1000 miles. With an excellent cruise speed of 115 Knots, the CTLS sips fuel at a rate of less than 5 gal/hour of fuel. With a 49” wide cabin and a useful load of 550 pounds, the CTLS will get you where you want to go, comfortably. This aircraft comes loaded with the latest technology including a Garmin 496 moving Map GPS, with ability to display weather and traffic, a BRS parachute system, a 4 point safety restraint, excellent cockpit visibility and much more. A fun and reliable airplane, perfect for learning to fly, or for taking a cross country fight after you have earned your certificate

A New Rating - Sport Pilot Requirements and Limitations
  • At least 17 years old
  • 20 hours minimum total flight time
  • Pass a written and flight test
  • No flight physical required, however, a valid US driver’s license is required
  • Day VFR (Visual Flight Rules)
  • Max of 1 Passenger
  • Cross country flight is permitted throughout the country (Additional training required for flights in busy airports)
  • Light Sport training hours accrued, will count towards Private Pilot requirements.
  • Aircraft must meet sport pilot requirements.
